I am looking at a 69' conv. with a 2 holes in the frame as described in the ad for it. What kind of money does it take to replace a frame on these cars if needed? Does the "birdcage" rust badly as well? Thanks
Thanks for the quick response. The car is a complete un-molested example, matching numbers, still had all the equipment under the hood, smog pump, protecto plate, and build sheet. It's also all original paint, 350-300hp, 4 speed, with new interior. It's kind of a survivor, but, I'll wait til the photos show up to see if its worth the 4 hour ride.
Hi Al,
The car sounds like the 69 might be a very interesting find.
Check very carefully for RUST because IT'S 'molestation' is the WORST kind.
Hopefully it's not too bad!
Regards,
Alan
if the frame has holes in it, and the windshield frame is shot, I would have a hard time believing even an expert telling me that the birdcage is fine...
on an unmolested car, it is never 2 out of 3.. it is all 3,
subtract 75% from the asking price, or walk away...
to answer your question.. you can get a used frame maybe for 2500 if you shop around and go fetch it yourself. new ones are 4000+ several hundred to ship.. but on rusted frames, the repair will escalate... parts will break, bolts will strip, and the 'while it is apart' disease will take over.. are you really going to just slip a new frame under a car with old u-joints, old suspension bushings, shocks, transmission mounts, old brake and fuel lines?
unless you really know what you are doing and want to devote about 3 years of your life to the car.. run forrest run...
what compounds do you use after wet sanding, and what kind of pads, form or wool? i was using foam and i think its making scratches in the paint, in the sun i see a bunch of round scratches and the polishing compound isnt taking them out
