Default Engine project (but not for the Vette)

Hey all, I'm in the middle of an engine swap for our parts hauler/tow vehicle '75 Chevelle Station wagon. It's engine ate it after only 200,000 miles (we rebuilt it in '86, it had about 250,000 mi on it's original engine). I thought you might be interested in what's happening.

We bought a GM short block for the sake of expedience. It has a lot of nice features and the fact that all the parts are brand new, makes it a good value.

I'll be doing a little parts swapping, however.

Not too bad lookin'

The only thing that bugs me are the dished pistons. That will hurt the compression a little.

These stiffeners are a great feature, they help immensely in sealing the oil pan and not bending the pan rail. What an idea.

Ooooo, powered metal connecting rods. They are really nice looking. Perhaps nitrous isn't such a bad idea.

Engines are cool, eh?

It also comes with a nice single row roller timing chain. That's good enough for this engine. This was a nice surprise.

Out with the old cam, it's only rated at 205 hp.

Gooping the cam. It's a Comp Cams Extreme 4x4 262H-11. Good for towing int. .460, exh .480, adv. dur 262/270. @ .050 dur. 218/226

A little silicone in each corner as per Fel Pro instructions.

These new gaskets are awesome.

All done, until next time.

What engine is that? How much did you pay for the sort block and what are the specs? Looks alot like my LMI long block. I payed $1369 delivered. Put a $60 cam from summit in it and am getting about 270 horse. Geetty up!

I got the engine from http://www.goautocenter.com They are just over in Dallas so I picked it up. It was only $1070 + tax. It's listed as the '71-'85 replacement engine with 205 hp. Cam specs are totaly weak, int. .390 exh .410 dur @ .050 192/202. http://www.goautocenter.com/350_1971-85.htm Quoting their specs "100% New engine, 350 CID, 4-bolt main, V-8, 2-piece rear main seal, nodular iron crank, forged rods, 8.5:1 cast pistons" overall not a bad deal.

That is the exact engine I got but I got the heads too. So I paid an extra $200 for the heads, not a bad deal plus no tax since I ordered it out of Ohio. paceparts.com. That comp ratio is with 72cc heads so if you go with 64cc you should get about 9.3/1 , not too bad. Pace had it dyno'd with a GM cam with the same specs as mine (204 and 214 dur and .422 and .444 lift) at 280+hourse but with open headers and 650 carb. I have a 600 carb and the stock manifolds. I am real happy with it so far but of course, like most of us, I need a little more kick.

Was thinking about putting my 750 dp on it just to see what it would rear wheel dyno at.
