I have them also but they're not chrome.
The interior is painted silver leaving the outside edge shiny chromelike non painted metal.
If you like chrome you can have them chromed.I've seen them chromed but for my taste I like them factory.
Hi
I understood that the factory gills where alu.
The ones on my 68 are chrome and I just don't know if this where available at GM over the counter, or pure aftermarket.
Contrary to 69er, I prefer the chrome as there is no alu visible anywhere else on the car. Only chrome and polished stainless.
I also heard that all available gills are actually alu, chrome is not readily available anymore. May be on E-bay ?
Good luck. Gunther :seeya
Gunther I would guess would be aftermarket.
Mine are GM louvers are painted silver with the bright chromelike unpainted 1/16-1/8" frame.
Don't know if they're alum,s/s or just metal.
I think you will have to buy a set and have them chromed.

Re: '69 Chrome Gill Inserts (69er)
As far as I know, the ones on my 69 are the originals. They were completly chrome until about 2 months ago when I noticed that most of the ones I saw on other 69's were painted argent silver with the edges chrome. I posted the question here asking if they should be chrome or painted. The general consenus was that the painted interior with the chrome edges was correct and that many people removed the silver paint to run them completely chrome (I guess the previous onwner must have done that to mine). I repainted the interior argent silver and left the edges chrome and I think they actually look better that way.
Might want to check in the "factory correct" forum to confirm this.
Also, I did'nt think the louvers were offered in 68', I may be wrong on this though.
They are all chrome .Just strip paint off .Did it with mine and I'm getting ready to do the same on my dads 69 looks much better ,especially with darker colors.
Re no other 'aluminum' colors on the car, don't forget the steel ralley wheels are also painted argent silver and coupled with the chome/SS caps and trim rings, they match up perfectly. If you have TT2s or other aftermarket chrome wheels, than the all chrome would look great but it is not factory correct. They were originally made of some kind of pot metal; not sure about the repros.
Even though they were a 69 only option, I think they really complete the shark look of the gills on 68s and 69s and really set them off on dark color cars! The only color where they wouldn't show up very well would be on silver or grey cars where chrome may look better.
