Voltmeter on 77?
Red light comes on when started and then goes almost out. Gauge shows abt 8-9 volts but does not kill the battery. Took off neg.on bat and it died .New alt. and then it did not stop. Rich

Sounds like the diode trio inside the alternator. Take the alternator to be tested and the test equipment will confirm what failed. They sell overhaul kits pretty cheap and they are easy to overhaul
