Went to pull the power steering valve and piston to rebuild them to stop a long standing leaking issue. Thing is, I cant get the Valve off the car. I can not get the stud to pitman arm to release. Beating the snot out of it with a pickle fork -- am I missing something or should I keep beating it?
I never use a pickle fork any for releasing tapered studs. They ruin the seals (if you had planned to reuse them) and mark the studs up.
Hold a bf hammer against one side of the pitman arm adjacent to the stud and whack the other side with another bfh. The stud will pop out after a few good whacks. On the pitman, if you have a pitman puller it is sometimes easier to remove the pitman from the steering box then remove the pitman from the valve stud. That way you can lay the pitman against some kind of anvil while you whack the other side instead of holding a hammer against it.
The trick is the bf hammer resting against the pitman arm when you hit it on the other side with another bf hammer. The stationary hammer absorbs most of the energy and prevents it from being transfered up into the steering gear.
