Default Weatherstripping problem

I just put new door weather stripping on my 73 coupe. Fit good, however you really have to slam the doors to get them to close. Seems as if the new rubber is too hard. Any way to soften the rubber or is this just normal until new rubber breaks in?

I don't know of any ways to soften it but I've only dealt with weather stripping once. I say just break it in.

got any pics?

I think most spray silicone on weather striping to keep it soft. I would not use any thing else in worry that it would damage it.

I have heard that Silicone spray will help. Off I go to Auto Zone. I will give it a try.

Were your new door mains latex rubber? The factory used latex because it was softer and sealed better.

If not latex, your new weatherstripping will take a "set" and it will be easier to close the doors.

No, not latex. Spoke with Eckler's and they said they had been having some issues with the latex seals. I believe they were sticking and tearing when the doors were closed for a while. They said they had a new vendor and the problem should be corrected soon.

I know my post will not be so beneficial for you, but when it comes to a Corvette weatherstripping, CRC is the brand to buy from, sold via Willcox.

Hi b,
When I first put the new door weatherstps on my 71 I had to slam the doors too.
After a couple of weeks of being closed most of the time, the doors took much less effort to close, and seem just fine now a few years later.
Maybe a little bit of a wait well help your situation too!
Regards,
Alan

PS: I like CRC weatherstrip too.

Just sprayed them with silicone spray. Seems to make a difference. I will give them some time and a little more silicone. If no success, will order new one's from Wilcox.
