I was made aware of this car from a church member, told a buddy about it who is a chevy guy. He didn't have much good to say about the engine and trans the car came with. Can anyone share their experience with this particular year? It has the cross fire injection, from what I read so far, it is the throttle body similar you see in the mid 80's and early 90's trucks. Thank you.
They put them in the 82's and 84's. Thats it. That alone says alot. The 84's never held any value. When they are running "right" they are great on gas mileage. But the majority of them have not been kept up, so they get a bad rap.
I have two 82's in my household. My wife's and my son's. Very nice drivable cars. Never hesitate to take them on long distance drives. My son drives his 13 hours straight from home to collage and back every year. The motors are a standard 350 with the crossfire fuel injection. Basically means two throttle bodies instead of the one used on the trucks. Pretty basic. No mysteries. I'm sure the crossfire didn't last because better technology came along. The trani if it is original can be a little on the week side if you get on it to hard, but for just fun driving, they are fairly reliable. Very happy with both of these vehicles, but for me I drive a 1970.
Most of the folks who don't like the C/F never owned one or had something go bad and didn't know how to fix it. Many who buy one just throw the computer control stuff away and stick a carb on it.
Too bad. Its a nice setup for someone who wants a smooth running engine with "fair" performance and decent fuel mileage. The 700R4 tranny is a nice unit, but the '82s got it first and there were some durability issues. But, take care of them and they do OK, too.
Mine was in an '84...had no problems and liked it a lot.
Had an 84 with the 4+3 manual trans. The crossfire ran dependably but it was a dog and the only way you could really get any power boost would have been to change the whole system out.
Don't get me started on the 4+3 either, stupid OD's go out on those things regulatory. They are not cheap to repair either.
