Default Shims Issue

Hi Guys,

Im looking for some advise. Was driving my 73 Vette teh other day when i heard something fall out. I stopped and checked it was a shim.

Is it still ok to drive the car, would it cause any damage, is it dangerous, or am i best not to?

There's body shims, suspension shims, all kinds of shims. Best to find out where it came from. If one shim fell out, perhaps all the others in that location did too.

It sounds like it is a trailing arm shim from your description... I would inspect this before driving the car. If it is stainless someone has changed it and there may be a bolt lose from the front of the trailing arm to the frame.

Not to mention that someone left out the cotter pin to secure the rest of the shims.

The rear tires will try to toe in as you accelerate and toe out as you break. If you hear banging, that is your trailing is toeing in and out. I would bring it to and alignment shop and have rear wheels aligned and tighten all the bolts down. You may have to buy shim ahead of time. A lot of shops may not carry them.
