Default Help me decode this engine?

Hi, I'm looking at a 454 BB. The seller says it is out of a '73 vette, and that it is an LS5.

Date K 27 72
Casting 3999289
ID Code TI129CWB

CWB tells me it is out of a '73 chevelle or Monte Carlo, but date code looks like it's a '72.

The I in the ID code is probably supposed to be a 1 for november 29.

The casting number does line up with a '72 LS5 out of a vette, I think. But also a '73 chevelle.

And I did not think chevy put an LS5 in the '73

Any ideas on what this is? And if it may have been out of a vette?

Amazing how all used engines miraculously come from Corvettes and always the highest HP made for that year

The block was cast on Nov.27 1972 and the engine assembled on Nov.29. Production of 1972 model years was over by then and 1973 in full swing. There were no LS5 engines installed in any 1973 Corvette, it was called an LS4.

CWB as you have found was a lower HP engine fitted to Chevelle or Monte Carlo. There should be an additional set of numbers on the pad that will identify which car.

Default 454 engine?

The other way to check is by the letters at the beginning of the VIN. As stated the Corvette LS 5 was not manufactured in 1973 only an LS 4and if it is a true 454 LS 5 the letters prior to the VIN down by the water pump should be, CSR for a manual transmission and CSS for an automatic. The 1973's 454's are CWM (manual), CWR (automatic), CWS (California automatic), and CWT (California manual). You are correct the casting number for a 1972 Corvette 454 however is 3999289. Check the intake manifold number, the 1972 454 should be 6263753.
