Okay, you're gonna love this one. I've got my chevy parked out in the driveway with a good quality car cover that fits nicely over the curves of my 74. I have no garage, so this is how I've been putting her to bed for the winter for the past 7 or 8 years. Well, no problem there. However, this year, for some strange reason, my neighbor's cat has decided to use my car cover as his own personal scratching pole - and he's brought along a few of his little buddies to do the same. The car cover is fairly new (I usually replace it every two or three years), but now it looks like it's been through a war zone. I've got patches of tape all over; and I'm not the only one. The guy down the street is in the same boat as me with his T-bird. So, how can I get rid of this little punk rat catcher, short of shooting him?

You might try putting several moth ***** (naphthalene) in 3 inch sandwich bags. Poke holes through the plastic to carry the scent and hang them around the perimeter of your cover. A stapler should work fine for securing them along your cover bottom. You may need to repeat the process as the naphthalene dissipates in a few weeks. Mothballs work by keeping wildlife away from flower beds, so why not cats?
We tried mothballs to keep our dogs out of the flowerbed - no joy. The 3 legged dog will p!$$ on an electric fence just to prove a point. So it may or may not work.
Do you really want to know the best way to keep cats & dogs (and probably Foxes too!) you do what they do! - mark-out your territory - confused, well late in the evening go out and urinate on your boundaries, you'll need to do this several times for sufficient coverage! - with good luck it should keep them away - bad luck and the 'boys in blue' will be knocking on your front door
My first attempt to get rid of the nieghbors cat was a pelet pistal with darts loaded in it....correct, that did not work.
But if you use a live trap with tuna, take the captured kitty to the animal shellter and about the 3rd time the owner has to pay to retrieve the cat, they tend to keep it indoors at night.
From: some hole in the ground town- camp verde:) arizona
set up a perimeter of fishing line around the car about 6 inches from it at various heights. it's not an eyesore and it should work. just a small stake at each corner. i've done this with hay bale strings to keep the horses from eating the bark of mulberry trees in the pasture.
it's humane, ethical, and more legal than some ideas mentioned above. btw i'm a cat person! they seem to have more personality than dogs, i think. plus they don't bark at the cats and skunks etc. in the night when i'm trying to sleep!!!

I prefer dogs myself but that's a discussion for another day. Where I live, I discovered that most animals here have more rights with the state than I do. That said, I employed the live trap with a free lunch and deposited the individual cats (feral or otherwise) with the local humane society for disposition.
Haven't had but one return lately and will offer it another ride sometime soon, once secured.
Back in the old neighborhood and when they were just cats, most nuisance problems were dispatched in various methods, mostly humane. Just wanted them to stop tearing up property when they were on ours.

cats hate tinfoil. duct tape some tinfoil on the areas they scratch and they wont do it.not tight it has to crinkle when they touch it. I put a sheet on the counter when my wifes cat remembers he likes jumping up there. Stops him again for a while.
If that doesnt work and your a DIYer google "scat-mat" and get out the soldering iron
I have the same problem as Cab1, except the cover is on my 88 RX7 GTU, and the cats doing the scratching are mine (I think). I bought the 82 vette last summer and moved it in with my 70 MGB roadster. The RX7 was evicted and forced to live outside under a car cover along with my daily driver and truck. Now the cover on the RX7 looks like that described by Cab1. I'm surprised they haven't attacked the vinyl bed cover on my truck! I'll have to try some of the suggested tips. ...or better yet, get rid of the cats! ...or get a 5 car garage (that'd be nice)!

I find your blatant dismissal of the 22 rimfire CB cap disturbing. Perhaps you don't have a ready means to dispose of the remains? OK. How about this take on the hava-heart trap. I assure you the trip to humane society will be one way.
