My motor isn't running yet. And It's pretty beefed up compaired to the 195HP L-48. I've herd many things. But, most people have Hi-Perf. heads. I've just got ported 882's. What can I expect with this cam? How is the low-end torque? Will the motor wrap up to 5,500 while still making power???
My cam is similar to yours, so: Yeah it'll work with a stock converter...My Comp Cams Book says that Cam is good from 1300-5600 RPM, so yeah you should make it to 5,500 RPM unless ya got another problem. Now, a Q from me.....shouldnt you have asked all this stuff before ya bought it? My $.02
Actualy, when I talked to CompCams I really hadn't done anything to my heads or exhaust. And I wasn't really planning on it. I just told them what my stock L-48 had and they recomended the XE-262. then I got headers, ported heads and so forth. I just wanted to see what the cam would operate like. My buddy with an XE-268 in his 74 4 speed pulls like crazy from about 2,000+ and REALLY starts pulling at 3-3500..
I put the XE-262H in my 383 when I built it. It idles just like my stock L-82 did. It really seems to work well with my 383. The guy from Comp Cams said that the XE-262H would produce better low end torque than a XE-268H but would have slightly less top end horse-power. Because I was concerned with losing too much vacuum, I opted for the XE-262H and have been very happy with it. Good luck.
Not running it. This should fix you up anyway. 383 is different so the cam appears smaller in 383, more lope in 350. Expect a nice cammed idle in your 350/auto. w/ 12-16 initial & all in by 1800-2800.
I have the same cam, use the Comp roller rockers @ 1.52 ratio. You don't have to worry about clearances as with the 1.6's and it makes it run and lope better.
1.6 rockers with the XE-262 here. Little bit more lope than the old Crane 272 Energizer but the Comp is ground on a 110 lobe centerline angle vice 112 (or it may be 114) for the Crane.
Dyno2000 says I gave up about 15 hp at 5000 rpm but gained about 20 ft-lbs in the 3-4000rpm range for this cam versus the XE-268.
Since my car is a daily driver, I went with the XE-262. It will pull to 5000 easily (probably 5500 with no problem but I only have about 750 miles on the engine so far). I like the fact that if I forget to downshift, the car is not killing itself when the revs drop to 1500 or so. :smash:
BTW: With my gears and the OD, I cruise at 70 ish at 2000 rpm so I didn;t want all top end.
Actually, I could careless about making 500HP@6,500RPM. I'd rather make 600FT-LBS @ 3500RPM. I love low-end torque. I like to be able to scare people and get to 60 REAL fast! :chevy
Question whats the red line of the XE262 ? will it pull 6000 ? Crane has a magazine add on the 272 in comparison to the xe262 & they, Crane, contend 18 more hp & 15 fl lbs of tourque .............I will be doing a cam this winter on my 427 & looking for 6000 redline & 450 ft lnb of tourque the xe 268 seems to mild for a big block but i want tons of tourque .....i
