Sure it would be nice to have an aluminum water pump but it is not in the budget right now....I was wondering if anyone has recently purchased an OE style pump from mid America motorworks ? Are they good units ? New or rebuilt ones ?
simple, go to your local auto parts store and they will not charge you a arm and a leg.....
Really ? Are they truly the best choice. When I was running a Pontiac you could bet the local auto parts store water pump was junk. Bad impellers, bad impeller clearance, rebuilt poorly not new. If that is not true I'll just go to pep boys....
My experience has been that rebuilt stock pumps are junk; even what used to be the good ones from NAPA.
I use Edelbrock pumps with no issues. I realize they're not cheap...but I never hear any issues from the ones I've done - heck, the one on my beater truck went something like 86K trouble-free miles!
I put a (presumably Chinese) GMB (new) pump on mine about 4 yrs. ago from AutoZone. It was cheap. Was a dead ringer for the OEM pump except for a barely-visible logo in the bottom of the casting, and it's still working well...knock on wood....
If you go to your local parts store, you are able to take your old one with you and compare right there in the store. If you order one, maybe you'll get the right one, maybe you won't.
I always wondered why people order some of these parts from the corvette warehouses and pay a premium. Think about it, over 90% of people who own cars will just go to the local parts store and buy a replacement whether rebuilt or new. Nowadays they even come with lifetime warranties. I used to work at a part store and we rarely ever saw any returned for warranty issues.
These are parts most people use on daily drivers and these cars aren't normally used as such. If it isn't for NCRS reasons, I'd buy one locally so it is easy to exchange if you need to and spend the $75 on something else. Sooner or later you'll find something that you need from them. Yeah, you might get a bad one but odds are it will work just fine for you.
Got mine from Napa. 3/4 shaft and all correct dimensions. It's been working fine. I kept my old pump that has the correct casting numbers to rebuild for tha next replacement.
