I just finished replacing the power steering in my 78 with the Borg. kit from Summit & it is impressive. This was part of a new engine replacement so I went thru the new cam break-in procedure & once I shut it off I refilled the p/s resovoir & jacked the front up to purge the steering system. At this point I had not moved the steering wheel at all. The system seemed to have already purged itself. The steering never squealed or made a noise of any kind. It was simply ready to get up & go! The steering is more responsive & much improved the look under the car. I learned of this swap on this forum & wanted to say thank you to everyone who participated in the conversation. I also wanted to report that this is really a good idea & that the swap went smoothly. The Borgeson kit turned out to be a quality product just as most members reported. Thanks again!
Paul allof the details can be found by doing a quick search of this topic but for me it was a bit easier because the motor was out. The steering col. will "collapse" if you beat the hell out of it! In my case I made a capped tube just a bit larger than the col. It must be forcibly struck tp shear the plastic tabs that allow the col. to collapse. Once you shear the tabs you tap the col. slowly up until you achieve the length you need ( determined by slipping the new rag joint on the col. & then slipping the new box into the rag joint & into position on the frame)- again- all explained by members in much greater detail- check it out. This is a really a beneficial modification. lonebull
I pulled the column out of the car and placed it on a block of aluminum. Then I smacked the shaft with a hammer until the shaft started to move. I placed a small block of aluminum on the shaft so as not to damage the splines when I hit it.
I also just completed the borgeson install in my 78. The difference is amazing! I was actually able to collapse my steering column with a small piece of 2x4 and a hammer. I actually had to use a pair of vice grips on the shaft when i installed the rag joint because of how easily the shaft collapsed.

In.. It moved with very light tapping on a piece of 2x4. I was using a 28oz ball peen hammer... The vice grips prevented me from pushing the splined section back up into the column.
I was also in the middle of installing long tube headers so I had removed the stock manifold and had plenty of room to work. It'd be a bit tighter with headers in the way.
