How much does the drop base air cleaner give ya? You think it'd make all the difference?
This guy said the "only way to know for sure is to put it in and do what you need to to make it work"
Not the exact advice I was looking for :P maybe I can just cut a hole in the hood..

Zap,

Do you need all of the accessories and starter and such? Maybe you can get a ZZ4 crate longblock for a better price without? Still will have a dizzy and waterpump.

Also, price this engine at Pace Performancce and Scoggins-Dickey (and maybe your local GM dealer), see if they can do better to get the sale.

I don't really need the starter, but the guy I bought this off of didn't really baby it like he claimed and I would like to replace all the pumps and pulleys while it's out. I'd had to put a brand new motor on old equipment. The pulleys and pumps I can't seem to find an easy kit... Summit showed me one for 2k.... Not happening.

From Jegs (who contacted a GM tech)
"the Gm tech couldn't tell me if that engine would clear under the hood
he did tell me the height of the intake which is 3.14" from the center line of the mounting bolts on the intake to the center line of the carb mounting flange
if you want to give me your email address he said he was going to email the specs on the intake and I will foward them to you if he does"

as far as the flywheel goes.

Talking to the guys at Summit right now who have the same motor, they say it will not clear the hood.

" Any upgrade for the Vette will require a custom hood, or a custom built motor with stock intake"
Who are you going to listen to, them or us? There are plenty of folks here on this forum who have installed ZZ4 motor in their 'vettes, they will help you make it work. There is an old chinese proverb that goes a little something like this: “The person who says something is impossible should not interrupt the person who is doing it.”

Lol Scott, always appreciate your input.
I'm real tempted to just go for it but I like to look at things 100 different ways because once it's at my door steps... I gotta deal with it haha.

I may just go for it and hope for the best. I mean, this if Florida, I could drive it without the hood :-P not that I would want to hahha but I could!

Also this is what the GM Tech sent me in relation to the Heads specs... It's all Greek to me ha.

You guys are always helpful,

Well looks like that intake is under 4" from the china wall to the mounting pad. I don't see any problem.

Maybe you should start a new thread, and use the term ZZ4 in the title, something like "ZZ4 engine, worried about hood clearance", get the ZZ4 guys to come out of the woodwork and get you wised up about hood clearance, so you'll have a little piece of mind when you plunk down your 5 large.

I think you should be ok, the intake manifold in the photo doesn't look very tall, and the '79 hood gives you a little more clearance than some others. The warnings from manufacturers about hood clearance are oriented toward the use of the stock air cleaner, I think. If you are lucky, a dropped base air cleaner will allow you to use a 3" element and still close the hood. I have only really ever had to deal with hood clearance on my own 'vette, which is a 1980, (I have even less room to play with than you do) So I can't really make any promises, except this: when the time comes, we'll figure something out!

Zapa, did they say anything about the fitment of the accessory package on the front of the engine in your car? If it fits I would sure like to know.
