Default fuel line leaks? Any help?

My fuel lines near the fuel pump seems to always leak a little, especially when I fill the tank before parking. When I first got the car about a year ago, I replaced the two S hose near the fuel lines with new reproduction S hoses because the were dry rotted. That was fine until recently.

Could the fuel pump be leaking? or the spring clamps not doing their job? Any suggestions????

If you're using the "original" spring clamps, it could be now they are weak and lost their original tension. I think most of the vendors have these new. Also, I've seen these "new spring clamps" want to leak too, so I don't know if maybe they are being reproduced "slightly oversized" not correctly tightening the rubber fuel line or these reproduced "S" rubber lines seem sometimes to run a little large. The best clamp seems to be a small worm gear clamp, which tightens around the whole "circumference" of the hose. These can be used if you're not concerned about "originality".

Thanks Paul, Clamps look fine, gas is dripping from above (half of pump is wet).

I have a busted fuel pump instead of leaking fuel lines. All around the top seam of the fuel pump is leaking. Going to chevy dealer for a new one at lunch. Local parts only have Master's brand or Unversal pumps to fit.

With A/C on the car, it looks like from the bottom and thru inner fender is the only way to the two bolts and 3 hoses. Then Chilton manual mentions a bolt in the front, opposite forward pump mounting bolt? That a longer bolt can be placed to hold pushrod in place?

I haven't look for this bolt yet, but I remember putting heavy wheel bearing grease on pushrod on an old truck many years ago. An old mechanic showed me that trick when I couldn't get that fuel pump back on.

So hopefully tonight, I'll have it back in the garage with a new fuel pump. It rained yesterday, so it got a bath and cover of leaves. Thanks :seeya

If you look at the front of the engine...in the fuel pump area, you'll see a bolt. Remove it. Bump the engine to make sure the fuel pump rod is retracted in the furthest possible position. Hold it there. Use the axle grease trick too. Then, get a longer bolt and thread it into the hole of the bolt you removed. The end of that bolt will contact the fuel pump push rod, and hold it back. Makes it easier to put the fuel pump on. When you're done, don't forget to remove the longer bolt, and replace it with the original shorter bolt. Chuck

Thanks, Chuck. Found the bolt. Ask a few Chevy men, and never heard of that bolt in front. new pump is in, except for connecting fuel lines.

The bolt is there, now the trick was to bump the engine to get it full retracked. Hard to pull off retainer plate for that.

Another question (maybe another post also) Should the new Chevy 1#41240 or 1#6471216 have an orfice inside the return line of the fuel line? The old one appears to be an open 1/4 tube. Should I remove the orfice?

Some say yes, other say leave it the way it came (part store managers).

New fuel pump is fully installed. The orfice inside the return line stays! (Chevy 1#41240 or 1#6471216)

Found a chevy dealer with a corvette knowledgable mechanic, he says the orfice is to restrict return and put better pressure at the Carb. I can buy that explaination. The brass insert stay. Have not fully test fuel pump, but no fuel leaks and corvette is back inside. Mechanic says also on replacement power steering pumps there is now brass inserts (flow restrictor or orfice.)

If it were my car, I would replace the fuel hose and get some new clamps. Why take a chance at all? Leaking fuel is just one of those things you don't mess or cut corners with. The clamps that tighten with a screwdriver work better than the spring type....go with those.

Fuel pump and hoses do not leak anymore. No Gas leaks anywhere to see.

Took car for a hard drive around the block and on the highway, then parked it in garage. 1/2 hour later wife says there's a slight oder of gas in garage. Looked with drop light no fuel leaks, everything is dry.

Maybe she has sensitive nose, gas in carb cause minor fumes until evaporated??

I'll inspect in the morning.
