Last March I had to replace my driver side door which had 1 on top and two on the bottom. The replacement door took two on top and four on the bottom. I bought the door from a friend that owns a restoration shop and the body shop guy told me 0 to 4 can be expected but he has seen more.
I just repaired a 72 that the factory misplaced the body on the cowl. They shifted it over to the right so that the left was flush against the bonding strips, but the right was out to where it literally did not contact the bonding material. It had no shims on the left and 5 or 6 on the right. That would be about maximum.
BTW, I did correct the problem when I installed the new front. All of the trim work had to be relocated, because the factory had adjusted for the error. So much for the quality build at St. Louis.
My doors sag and a Corvette shop said until I get new body to frame mounts don't mess with them ....
I just did the metal work and body mounts and that is what opened this can of worms. I took the doors off to lighten the body for the lift. My fender had 1/2 inch of bonding material between it and the hinge pillar filler piece. There were 8 shims to make the door even with the fender on the top passenger side. The weather strip did not seal to the door frame and light would come in.
I removed the bonding material and got the fender to fit tight to the filler panel, but it seems I still need 5 shims for some reason. I even moved the bonding strip on the filler in as much as possible but the fender to cowl is tight and will not move in more. I am just worried that the weather strip will not seal. Right now the weather strip is off the door so I can not tell how it will meet the hinge pillar.
I have an extra door so I will try that on since it has the weather strip on it.
