after installation, the spring on left side is catching the frame and making unpleaseant noises. It iis seated correctly on lower ca, upper ca looks pretty close but not centering through hole.
Do I separate ball joint from steering knuckle to reset spring or is there another way to go?
Guessing that is why the previous spring had those spacers.
I'll try a spring compressor, didn't need the tool to take the old ones out and the right side turned out perfect.
After removing the spring and inverting it, the coils clear the frame opening into spring pocket. That was the easiest part of the this job. Ready for some driving.
Springs don't cost that much... I would just get the VBP 550# springs and cut 1/2 coil... this is mine with just that... I have 10" bolts on the back with about a 1/2" rake.

Ralph, Your front end looks too high? I did a Moog spring change without cutting the spring and there was about a 3" space between the tire and wheel flare.
Could the spring in your car not be seated in the upper pocket?
Per Pauls pic above that's about right. I got the VBP 550's and I did not cut a coil out and I am sitting at 27 3/8 vs he is about 26.5. I have a BB with aluminium heads/ intake/wp, and currently no AC compressor/condensor.
Ralphbf... damn......... you did or someone did something wrong if that is your car pictured above, esp if you cut a coil out already. You can seat the springs wrong if your not careful. Its easy to do.
You need to line of the edge of the spring up with the seat pocket right above or in front on the drain hole on the lower control if I remember correctly. I am not familiar with those springs you got, only the springs the Vette vendors sell. I did mine twice.
Yes Sir; I just bought a 330 # rear Composite & a set of 460 fronts. After looking at the height increase on your cars, I'm not sure I want to change the darn things.. The only problem I have with the stock 1982 set up, is when I take off to fast, it dips down in the rear, & Also at high speeds, 90 to 100, I still feel like I need to hang on, when the wind is the least bit blowing. I have the spreader bar, & Bilsteins, complete rebuild of all suspension. Both front & rear stock sway bars. I had a 1968 with 427, didn't think I had that problem, maybe I was too young & dumb, now I'm too old & dumb. Have a great one. Gene
Could they have been put in up side down?
Both ends looked the same to me?
I paid a shop here in town to do the work.
The car ride improved a lot, I just wish it was a lot lower.
Ralph
I didn't get the left side seated correctly on my first reinstall. I did invert the spring and it fit better--mine was chaffing against the frame pocket. After inspecting the groove or channel, even if the spring is not tucked in there, I dont' think it wouldn't ride as high as your pic shows.
From the pic, I wonder if there is something else to explain--not sure what to suggest, correct part #??
The springs are just as they come from Moog through Summit Racing.
Both ends are closed.
I cut a coil out of the stock springs as shown in the large picture.
As of now I'm planning on cutting another loop from the stock springs.
It's my only known factor.
Since cutting springs make them give a stiffer ride the new Moog springs would be too stiff for my liking.
So that would put me back to using what I ASSUME to be stock springs with 2 coils removed.
Get yourself some VBP 550's if your looking for a better handling, stiffer ride and lower ride height. I just know what others have used/recommended and I have not heard anything about the Moog summit springs.
Having the spring installed wrong can DEFINITELY give you an extra inch of ride height. Trust me, I've been there.
The area to look is the upper spring pocket. There's an inspection hole in the frame, make sure the end of the coil is roughly visible through that in that hole. Hold it there while someone else brings the LCA up. The car will drop if this was not correct the first time.
I remember that the spring pocket was deeper on the lower a arm then the upper, so when I cut 1/2 coil I was more interested in seating the lower pocket rather then the upper as it was much deeper and with a 1/2 coil cut it would not seat both the upper and lower properly.
On another note, you state you don't want a rough ride, Remember every time you cut a coil your spring rate goes up from what I have been told. And a rear sway bar and a big big front sway bar adds much more to the rough ride than do the springs in my experience

Going from 460->550 I didn't notice much difference in ride quality. Going from 300#->360# in the back was much more significant. Has to do with how close the driver rides to the rear spring.
