I have a 79 vette that is running off batt voltage. I checked the alternater and is good when full field is done. the problem i discovered is that one of the connecters to the alternater( brown wire) is not 12v as it should be when in start or run according to the manuel. this circuit leads to warning light and is fused. Can the ign switch be bad other than the fuse.
Sounds like the internal regulator is bad. Although the connection at the ignition switch could be loose it's more likely to be a bad regulator. The regulator is a plastic coated piece that plugs into the alternator. You would have to take the alternator apart to replace it. Take the alternator to your local parts store and see if they will test it for you. Schucks/Kragen/Checker does it for free. If it's not that then I suppose you will need to dig through the steering column to get at the ignition switch, or at least trace the wire that should have power and look for any breaks in it.
yes, you are correct. after checking the alternator with a ohm meeter connecter 1 and 2 were grounded to the case. possibly bad diodes. i took the alternator to kragen and checked out bad. eventhough the alternator was only a year old. also, the schematic does not show this connector #2(brown wire) lead to ign switch. It is grounded on the gauge block after passing through the volt meter light and gauge fuse. just confused where the switch is in the wireing. I assume after the fuse link.
