Blacking-out chrome plated wheels
I would like to recycle some old chrome plated wheels by blacking them out. The cost to powdercoat is about $80/wheel. The powdercoaters recommend I chemically remove the chrome plating and could not give me a cost for that.
Considering high cost, I am looking at just paint over it - roughen a little, prime, then paint. I would appreciate any views on this.

Both Dupli-Color and Rust Oleum make two part black chrome kits, for exactly what you're looking to do. The wheels on my daily Pontiac GXP came like this from the factory, and really cut's down the bling.

a scotchbrite pad will give enough tooth for Powdercoating .but two tone is a pain. black transparent will go on after cleaning with laquer thinner
