Door spring replacement
Hey all, need help again!!!
I've got the replacement door hinge spring and tool - but I'm a little confused on which end of the spring should be the top.
Is the top the end with the notch?
or the end thats just like crimped a little at the end?
Thanks, appreciate any help

I tap the spring from the botom and it feels like it bottoming out, but when I close the door the spring pops out...
What am I doin wrong???

I need to do this same job and put it off for fear of nicking door edge paint with the tool. Controlling spring tension is always a concern.
Thanks for the writeup, Ernie. As usual, you offer great help.

after reading it before edit, that in itself was a challenge.

Sully, my problem was I wasn't twisting the spring far enough for the bottom to seat in the notch on the bottom of the hinge.
Get a mirror and look up at the bottom of the hinge - -once I did that it made all the sense to me - - could even see were I was hitting the spring outside the notch....
Checkout Willcoxs photo here - Location "D" is where I was screwing up; ya really gotta twist the spring with the tool pretty good:

thanks buddy,
last night I got the springs in. I reread yours posts and did just like you said, put a little extra torque on that sucker and they are all good and in now! thank you.
Willcox: your pics are awesome and really helped too, many thanks for all you contribute to the forum!

When I replaced mine I used a small mirror placed at the bottom of the door jamb looking UP into the hinge area. It allowed me to see under the door hinge and where the spring was in relation to the openings. It helped to give some additional visual assistance to checking the alignment of the spring into the hinge.
