Need advice on getting performance from my engine.
Here is what I have to work with. I have a budget of $1000, and want to go as fast as possible for that amount, excluding buying NOS. My engine is in very good shape; an 87' Model, that has a roller cam and stock aluminum heads. Runs good, no leaks, no smoke, and uses 93 Octane to prevent spark knock(carbon build-up or decent CR?) Everything else is also stock, except that it has the 79 intake and Q-Jet. I don't know which intake it is. I would like to keep the heads; since my budget is limited. In a year or two, I will swap in a crate engine. Looking for more daily driver power until then.
My plan was to buy the following:
Set of Dyno-Max Cerama Coat Headers (will the headers made for 79 still fit my 87 engine?)
New Cam- Comp. Cams X-Energy Roller, 270, .495/.502 (1600-5400)
New Intake - Air-Gap Performer OR Air-Gap Perfomer RPM(will the RPM be too much for my stock aluminum heads?)
That is roughly $750. The other $250 will be used to buy new lifters, timing chain set and gaskets. I will keep my Q-Jet for now (if I go with the Performer RPM, I'll change it). Later I may add the 670 Street Avenger, and upgrade ignition.
So, what do you all think? Am I wasting time and money? Or, will this increase my performance enough to be noticed? My goal is to run 0-60 in 5 flat, currently 5.8 is about my average. My 1/4 time is about 14.5, would like High 13 or low 14's. Should I keep driving as is and save for that monster crate?:D Thanks for your input!
