i was reading the replys and went in the shop i started the car let it run at idle for about 10 min .got in the car hit the gas and the oil psi went up and was back to 60 psi at about 3000 rpm dont know what changed but its back. when i rev the motor the oil press follows. could it be their was air in the line going to the gauge??
Cold oil vs hot oil???
Air in the line doesn't stop the gauge from working.

That's the way it should work.
Cold oil will always have higher pressure than hot.
The inconsistancy you mentioned before may be from the relief sticking. You mentioned that the pickup was welded to the pump. The relif vslve snf spring should be removed when that is done so as not to cause a sticky valve.
You ran the oil 1000 miles then the car sat for 3-4 months. The drop could very well be viscocity breakdown. I used to run valvolene and noticed a substantial decrease in PSI in a short time due to viscocity breakdown.
Experienced unusual viscosity results.
I have been using Mobil1 10w40 in my trailer rig.
The other day I decided to try Mobil1 5w30.
After several hot/cool cycles and about 60 highway miles, I am getting consistent results.
Oil pressure is higher and the engine runs at a higher temp.
I would have thought that the pressure would be lower and the temp the same or slightly cooler.

Air won't make a difference - air gets compressed until the pressure in the line to the gauge is uniform.
i took the pump apart when welded the pickup.my readings were hot. now the psi is the way it was 60 at 3000 rpm. the psi follows the rpm . at idle its 25 psi as soon as i hit the gas it goes up and the comes back down with rpm to idle.dont know what changed.i didnt change the oil so i dont know
