I have an 81 that I think is stock although it lopes a bit at idle so maybe it has a mild cam. I really don't trust that the carb is tuned to it's fullest potential and think I would like to try to dig my fingers into a rebuild :smash:
What does the recurve kit entail, can I really do it myself? I did my shift kit install, front caliper rebuild, and carpet replacement myself so I'm a bit adventurous.
Can the kit still be purchased? or can someone suggest an equivalent.
Thanks,
John
In the Summit Racing Equipment catalog, they sell a Crane adjustable vacuum advance kit. It comes with a vac. canister, an adjustable vac. diaphragm, allen wrench, advance weight springs, and instructions. Part# CRN-99600-1 $22.95
A timing light that has an adjustable advance feature makes the job a little easier but a regular timing light will do the trick if you put timing tape on your harmonic balancer.
You can certainly do this and it will be worth your time and effort.
Does the computer in your '81 control the timing? If so, I'm not sure what or if there are limitations to tuning your timing advane.
Re: Lars and the magic recurve kit question (n8370c)
If you have the stock '81 system then the ECM controls the advance. There is no mechanical/vacuum advance with this distributor so Lars' recurve kits won't fit. Rebuilding you carb will make a big diferance is you haven't don't it lately. Seach the archives there is a lot of info on rebuilding the E4ME that came in the '81 vettes.
