Hey all have a question for yall.
First off Im not very knowledgeable about auto trannies so...
The car is a 77 vette with the stock auto transmission. It drives fine but when you punch it there is a noticeable lag and the engine revs but no real "go".
Trans fluid is fine and very clean.
Thoughts?
Does the fluid smell burnt? Change the fluid and filter and check for debris in the pan. If that doesnt resolve the issue you have internal problems with the trani.
Im not a transmission guy either but maybe a problem with the torque converter? Can you hear any grinding or noises? When your cruising and you punch it, can you feel the car downshift to a lower gear?
I suspect the seal is shot on the 'accelerator pump rod' in the carburetor. To determine if that is a problem, lift hood (engine OFF), remove air cleaner, open choke plate to vertical (if closed), look down into primary venturi and use your hand to exercise the throttle linkage to a 'full open' condition. If the accelerator pump is working properly, you will see 2 streams of gasoline (one in each venturi) shooting into the carb as you are moving the linkage to full throttle position.
If not, or if the steams are weak, the rod seal at the end of the accelerator piston rod is worn out/eaten away or has come off the piston.
If the transmission is not downshifting soon enough, when you put accelerator pedal to WOT, then you can make an adjustment with the downshift switch (under dash, above accel pedal). If the downshift is not occuring at all, either the downshift switch is bad/out of adjustment, or the downshift solenoid (inside the tranny, mounted to the valve body plate) is defective or plugged up.
