Advance it until it doesn't run right anymore, then retard it until it does. Then you've got it set right.

Most experts will say to have your mechanical timing all in at 36 degrees at about 2700 rpm. The mechanical timing should have a range of 22 to 24 degrees. Then what the intial is..is what it is...approx 12 to 14 advance. I'm sure Lars will jump in here and detail it a bit.

While advancing the timing can help low end throttle response, too much can hurt top end performance. As noted above the best thing to do is to recurve the distributor. Its usually best to taylor it to give you 12 to 14 degrees initial at idle with a total of "mechanical" advance + initial to = no more than 36 total all in by no later than 3000rpm. This curving of dist and setting of initial must be done with the vacuum advance disconnected. Once you achieve these #'s then re-connect the vacuum advance if so desired.

The WeasleVette is set at 16 BTDC initial...MSD Pro-Billet Tach Drive w/ Vac Advance...MSD 6A box...with the current advance stop, the total is 38 degrees.
I agree with setting initial until it starts to ping or is hard to start. Good Luck  !
