I have a 77 L82 with the automatic trans in it (it needs work) and was wondering what sort of transmission would be a good, economical (relatively) swap.
Its not a numbers matching car, engine wise, so thats not a big deal. Im also open to autos or manuals but kinda want it to be as cheap as possible so all the extra stuff for a manual may put it out of my range.
Unless you drive the car a LOT and on the highway most of the time, you probably cannot financially justify swapping in an overdrive tranny. There are just too many "other" things that need to be done...beyond the cost of the transmission.
A DIY repair of your tranny is the least expensive way...unless you have no experience at rebuilding them. The next best approach is to just exchange your unit for an already rebuilt [like] unit from a local tranny rebuilder. Find a small [privately owned] shop that has been in business for a long time and comes well recommended for quality and standing behind their work. Ask about how their warranty will work, considering that you will be installing the tranny.
