Default 70-72 Retractable Antenna Mast?

I picked up a copy of the C3 restoration guide, and I found something I wasn't aware of - not all 70-72's had fixed length antenna masts. It mentioned that some cars came from the factory with retractable antenna masts.

When I bought my car, it had a retractable power antenna in it. I like it, but it bothers me knowing it's not stock. But I don't want to go to a fixed mast. Has anyone seen one reproduced, or seen a part number for it?

I think the book is wrong. I've never run across factory retractable on cars that early.

It's from the Corvette 1968-1982 Restoration Guide 2nd Edition, by Richard Prince.

So it's from the same author that wrote the C3 Buyers Guide that get's posted in 'looking to buy' threads.

I don't think this guy would put something in a book unless he was sure about it. The exact quote, in the 70-72 section, is -

Most antennas utilize a fixed-height mast, though some originals have telescoping masts. Either way, the antenna ball is .300 inch in diameter, not .250 inch as seen on later replacements.

Contact Mr. Prince and ask where he got his information.

nope no retractable ant masts... I don't know when they started but not that early. Mashman... I removed my fixed mast ant and all the hardware from my 72. The ant and everything is factory and in great shape. I have no idea what to ask but if you are interested make me an offer and I can get you some pics. I filled it in and removed it during the repaint.

Sully

nevermind, i just saw you "don't " want to have a fixed mast. My bad

Mike, Good idea. I think I will try to see if I can find out where he came up with that by asking him.

Sully, thanks for the offer. Maybe someone will see this post, and give you a call.

I've got that book at home and I will read back through it tonight. That's just odd.

If a retractable antenna was offered, there should be an option code in the assembly manual. Even the LS7 is listed in the 70 manual though none were ever sold which I know of....

ummm.... yeah, I think I hinted at that when I said the LS7 is listed. I'm saying if it EVER existed up to time for production, it's probably listed in the assembly manual. Whether any actually shipped is up to the historians to tell us.
