I am looking for advices with regards to air cleaner.
Most of the vendors offer several types for the same vehicle with prices ranging from $10 to $60.
I am looking for the air cleaner element (the filter) for a 1971 LS5 (454/365 with a Rochester Q-jet).
The filter element pictured is 14 inch diameter and 3 inched high. This is what you are asking for, right?
Any name brand filter will do the job for street use. I prefer a K&N, but just a personal choice.
Just remember the K&N will flow more, but it will also allow more dirt to pass through. There's a tradeoff.
I see a lot of claims like this but haven't seen anything specific. The most I've heard is that the K&N isn't as effective for very small particles. I'm all ears for something concrete
The question also kind of becomes is this "more dirt" sufficient to cause problems if in fact this is the case. As long as the filter is cleaned and oiled at least once/year, I've never seen or heard of an engine with bore scoring, excessively dirty oil, etc. from K&N use. Dry, it's a lousy filter for sure.
But, it's a risk everyone needs to assess for themselves for sure.
Well make no mistake the K&N isn't going to be allowing dirt clods to pass through for sure, and is a fine filter in my opinion. I drive a very limited amount of miles a year, and use the filter myself.
However over at BITOG.com, you can see in numerous used oil analysis reports, and on actual air filter comparison reports that indeed the K&N will pass more particulants. That is true of any of other similiar mfg.filters as well. There will be a tradeoff to more flow, it's up to the end user to do the comparisons and realize the tradeoffs.
Ad-hoc tests always need to be taken with a grain (or pound) of salt - but I'm interested in the links
Question remains if those additional particulates have an impact on the durability of the engine. Agreed that it's up to the buyer to decide what's right for them
I'm probably not posting this link correctly so I apologize in advance. I would also encourage the OP to look over at bobistheoilguy.com as they have an air filter comparison test on the front page. Also in that forum section (air filters) there are probably many more numerous links that could be looked through. I just don't want to spend the time. Then theres always the just google it as I did and pulled this link.
My opinion is, my Corvette is seldom driven because of our wonderful NW weather and regardless the oil is changed out yearly. Plus my OEM 75 needs the extra 1-2 horsepower the K&N may provide it.
Numerous data is available showing cotton/gauze filters simply pass more particulants then a standard OE type filter. In my opinion for a C3 non daily driver using these type filters the impact is neglible. For a daily driven car that impact I imagine would increase. Is the engine gonna blow...I would say no, but your oil will be dirtier.
