Well today's ride didn't go so well then the secondaries kept dumping after I let off the gas. Its currently and old Holley 4165. Idle is pretty terrible (I can't get it lower than 1200 rpm) without tearing into it. What I hate the most (petty comment coming) is that it won't fit under the stock air cleaner assembly. Bubba did a beautiful (terrible) job at modifying the old air cleaner base by cutting off the crankcase vent tube, plugging it with what looks like a bottle cap, and poorly rewelding it in a new location. Sans flame arrester.
I've heard bad news about aftermarket quadrajets, but i would like something that would fit the stock L46 air cleaner assembly.
Holley's are a pretty simple carb to rebuild, the biggest issue is giving them a good soak and cleaning all the passages really well(blow them out with air) , rebuild kits are inexpensive and when you're finished , they are easy to tune. There's probably a member near you who could help with the rebuild if you've never done one http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...3JwsscbLgvU-hA
hope this helps

If your in for buying a new one get a 750 vacuum secondary Holley, install and drive.
Some times carbs just wear out and its money and time a head to just buy a new one.
I would do a rebuild. Easy money. If I did another carb, it would be a Q-Jet because they are the best design for street use. The tiny primaries make them efficient; the secondaries are huge for power. Just my 2 cents...

Yes. What he said. That's yer best bet.
And, a Qjet is so adjustable.
Remember the Holleys were used on just a very few GM applications, before fuel consumption and emissions seemed important. As soon as those factors became significant, the Holleys disappeared very rapidly. The Qjet appeared about 1966 and was used in a jillion different cars through the late 80's.
Believe me a quadrajet was used by GM because it was cheaper than a Holley, not better.
A quad has to be takin apart to adjust the float Holleys don't, air idle screws on a quad are under the carb, Hollys are conveniently on the side of the bowl.
Holleys idle can be adjusted with your fingers a quad take a screw driver.
The thing about Q-jets is that ya kinda have to know what you're doing to make mods and tune 'em up nice, seems like. A smart chimp could get a Holley running half-way decent, (no offense intended, Tim H) that's why so many people like 'em, including me.
From: Las Vegas - Just stop perpetuating myths please.
Take a look at Summits own carb - its a Holley remake in 600 and 750 cfm. They call it the Summit Street & Strip carb but its an Holley 4010 and 4011 design they have reproduced. Only $250 new and have read good reports on them here on this forum.

Keep the shiny side up!

Iv'e been out of school for more than 25 years and and if I can tune a Holley without a college degree thats fine with me, Im not in it to learn anything, Im in it to fix and drive.
Jet has rebuilt q-jets for around $450. They make 3 versions. the stock one (001) works fine with stock engines. They use electric choke, so you have to remove the hot air tubes and put a block-off plate on the manifold. Mine worked great right out of the box. Buy them at Jeg's, Summit, or directly from Jet.
I thought you said it has a Holley on it now. What am I missing here?

It does have a holley now. Someone gave Bubba a tig welder for Christmas, and he pieced together this beautifully so that the stock air cleaner base would clear the accelerator pump:
I'd like to get a q-jet since they actually fit. No Holley fits, as far as I'm aware of.

Thanks for the tip billsfan. I'll do a search around here and see what others say. I would like to stay with the thermostatic choke, honestly.
I'm sure you're very excited about Mario Williams. I'm doubly excited as I left Buffalo and was in the stands here at NC State when Mario led our top-ranked defense.
Pete, I managed to make my 4165 fit by using a Mr. Gasket 14" air cleaner base with a 2" deep filter element. I just adapted the little 90 degree elbow on the base so it fit the breather hose and it worked OK...my problem was getting the carb to work right...it kept siphoning gas out of the secondary boosters...drip...drip...drip. I tried everything to get it to stop with no luck so I finally switched back to the QJet.

This is the exact problem I ran into this weekend: secondary boosters started dripping like crazy. I was thinking the powervalve was stuck open?
