We've got the carb/distributor/crate engine (I wish) loaner program. How about one for specialized tools?
I was just thinking about some of the tools that I have that I bought for one reason or another that I don't get much, if any, use out of. My leakdown tester is one that comes to mind. Paid like $70 for it a couple/few years ago because it was cheaper than paying a local shop to do a leakdown test. Haven't touched it since.
I know there are other specialized Vette tools or engine tools out there that people must have hanging around. Cam install tools, rear spindle tools, etc...
I'm thinking a program similar to the carb program. Maybe with a list of who has what tools. Drop a note to them, have them ship it out and send a check for the shipping in exchange. use the tool and either ship it home or send it on to the next person that needs it. We'd need to keep good tabs on where thsi stuff is, and as always HONESTY is the key.
I don't have much in the way of fancy tools, but I do have a pressure gauge with a 6' hose for doing the TV cable setup on a 700r4 tranny. I'd be willing to add that to the list as long as there are no problems with the loaner program.
Great Idea Dave, I think this could be a very useful. I myself don't really have much for specialty tools, but I'm sure there are many of us that do. I think it's a great idea!

Great idea, like the others I don't have many specialty tools. I bought an inch pounds torque wrench to set up my steering gear. Probably won't use that again. I am looking for a rear spindle setup tool right now. I hate to pay the $100 bucks as I probably will only use it once.

You BOUGHT an in-lb torque wrench?!?! I just used a cheap ruler and a 1lb box of spaghetti (or was it macaroni?) :D
I'm in the middle of a rebuild, and I've laid out at least a grand for tools. While some are way too heavy to be of use (because of shipping-compressor, shop press, etc.) others would be perfect (micrometers, calipers, torque wrenches, feeler gauges, etc.).
We could even do something similar to what they do at Autozone. We could use PayPal to lay down a deposit for the tool. When the tool returns, we refund the money, back to the borrower, via PayPal.
I've been thinking about it. Once someone mails something ONCE, we pretty well know what the shipping costs are for it. The only concern I have money-wise is just getting reimbursed for shipping costs. So once something gets sent the first time, paying up front for shippingf would be pretty easy via pay pal the second time.
A tool loaner section in the forum would be awesome. I bought the special tool for tightening the nut on the muncie main shafts...it's available to anyone that want's to pay for the shipping there and back. I also burned some CD's with the video that I shot during my rebuild that are available too...or I'm thinking about putting them on a VHS tape cause it took like 12 CD's for the entire video.

I will be interested in your Muncie tool in the near future. I'll let you know and will pay all shipping to and from your house for the use of the tool and video. How did your rebuild come out?

Dave-
The more I think of this, the more I like it! Some additional thoughts here are to add a possible inventory/condition listing for each tool. As some tools come with small or multiple pieces. And of course overall condition, as the motto: "You break, you pay." should apply.
In the mean time, I'll dig around the garage to see what would be of good use for the program... :D
If you guys can come up with what information you think should be in the web app I could see about getting one written that would be right here on the forum.

This is a great idea.
WOOHOO!! Did you hear that everybody? One of my ideas has been labeled as "great"!! :D
What do you guys suggest to be sure the tools make it back? I don't want to get into the business of being responsible for the tools, just for making it easier to share them.
We do need to think about the occasional bad apple that might not return them. Suggestions?
