Re: Tool Loaner Program? (ddecart)
Yeh, I went out and spent $75.00 clams on a MityVac Vacuum hand punp to bleed my 65's brakes, that's how I found out the calipers were blown out and leaking!! So their it sits in the box, brand new. Or how about that $30.00 right angle ratchet spark plug wrench that hits the excuast manifold
that I got from Mr. over priced Mid America that I only used once.
I bet between every one on this forun their must be enough speciality tools
to work on the Space Shuttle..
I don't have much of an update to give. I think the big driver of updates will probably be driven by requests for tools...something that we haven't seen much of so far.
I could use a front coil spring compressor as I am about to begin my front end rebuild as soon as my idler arm arrives. I was jsut wondering if there is going to be a page made for this or a different website all together. If anyone has a coil spring compressor that I can borrow please e-mail me.
John
Check auto zone(if ou have them by you), they may have one you can borrow since they loan tools. If not local, shipping might be close to the cost of one.
I'm all for this.
I have a inch lb torque wrench, a ft lb torque wrench, a vacuum pump, a vacuum guage, a 32 mm como wrench that I used once and will never use again, a homemade c3 door spring intall tool, a flare kit, a tap and die set, a micrometer($$$) and thats all I can think of....Oh and plenty of WD-40, duct tape and a really big hammer. Oh also have most air tools. My only condition is that I get them back asap because I'm an aircraft mechanic and I need some of this stuff to make a living.
Update - we just started our redesign of the overall website. It will take about six weeks to get that competely done. There will be some real nice improvements in the look of the site and a few new features in stage one.
In stage two we are going to improve on some old features and add some new ones. The tool loaner program is part of stage two.
Please just hang on for a bit longer and we will be able to get the tool loaner program up and running.
Is there a special tool required for changing the wheel bearings?
Yes,
Actually there are several tools available to make it an easier task. I'm not certain which specific tools arwe REQUIRED. But there are some specific tools for pressing out the bearings, another for setting it up for the proper end clearance. I don't recall anyone saying that they own any of them, but I'm sure soemone here does.
this would be amazing to have... i'm only 19... in college, and wanting to work on my vet, this makes it very difficult w/ the money. i am finding out more and more that tools are expensive. really sucks. i would be willing to participate in this... and my dad has a bunch of tools sitting around that i could share :D
I think utilizing Paypal to cover shipping to user in addition to assessing wear and tear user inflicts would be a way to protect loaner and still afford user a cheaper alternative to buying tool. Some users may have less common sense and misuse tool and/or cause damage to tool. I don't mind loaning tools but their eventual replacement may be necessary. I think up front charges should include price to replace said tool and shipping with insurance. Loaner upon receipt of loaned tool would assess damage if any and credit users Paypal for price of tool minus shipping and damage.
Example:
1.) $150 tool+$9 shipping/ins. = $159 credit to loaner's Paypal.
2.) $159-$9 shipping/ins.-$5 wear and tear = $145 credit to user's Paypal.
Does this seem unreasonable to you guys? This is how I would need to operate in order to loan my tools but other loaner's could do it their own way.
I, too, have a bunch of misc. stuff available, especially for guys in this area who want to come by and use it. Compression tester, vacuum guage, Shock mount remover, multimeter, wire feed welder, other stuff. Also have an extra set of hands, which I know from experience can be valuable. Just ask.
All sounds good. I have tach/dwell meters, timming lights, coil spring compressors, valve spring removal tool for not removing the heads, torque wrenches, grinders, welders, cut-off saws, AC test set, vacumme guages.
Only thing I would ask is for a deposit equal to the cost of the replacement of the tool. Lots of Autozone parts stores have loaner stuff.

I hear that! I just turned 20 last month myself, and money isn't exactly the easiest thing to come by! :D
This seems like an awesome program. The PayPal idea is great, too. I might be in the market for borrowing a spring compressor if my local autopart places don't loan them.

I know what you guys are saying. It wasn't until I was well into my 20s and making money that I decided to start buying tools instead of begging and borrowing.
