Hey guys. Question about half shaft u joints... I've got a new 350 going in my 69 4 speed car that will be putting out around 400-410 hp and I'm curious if standard u joints will okay with this setup. Problem is I already bought joints from Ecklers, see here http://www.ecklerscorvette.com/corve...1963-1996.html , and they've been installed in the half shafts. Anyone else running these with a hot street motor? This is my first rebuild and I honestly didn't give thought to the joints until someone else told me all they run are solids. I don't plan on abusing or racing the car but I am sure it will see an occasional red light launch. It's mainly a weekend cruiser.
I THINK that the ones I bought from Ecklers are precision brand. These look identical and have the same markings on the body - http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PCN-331/
Any thoughts? I realllyyy don't want to pull these back out unless I have too.
For around 400HP in a street car they should be fine as long as you are not running a slick at the dragstrip, but what are the condition of the half-shafts themselves? They can sometime be damaged or warped if the U-joints are not removed/installed properly. I am personally going with new Denny's half-shafts, but my car is more of a resto-mod. Good luck!
I don't think those will be a problem for you. The hole for the grease fitting does create a weak point but for the driving you say you do it won't hurt it. Now if you want to launch by sidesteping the clutch at 6000 rpm's that might be a different story.
Thanks for the input guys. I felt like solids might be overkill. Glad to hear that others feel the same way. I was not going to be happy if I had to rip these brand new joints back out.
