Default Air Vents

In reading a recent article it said "the front air intakes were divided into two sections, hidden under the chromed front bumper". Can anyone verify this comment? I have interior floor vents that don't connect to anything.

Sounds like that article is wrong. The air vents are located at the kick panels as far as I know.

I agree that the kick panels have vents but there is nothing on the body of the car that allows air to enter.

"the front air intakes were divided into two sections, hidden under the chromed front bumper".

I believe that is the front air intakes for the radiator.

The reference to chrome bumpers narrows it down to 68-72. What year was your article referencing? I agree with MelWff: probably radiator air flow.

Your kick panel vents should allow outside air into the car when the vents are open.

It is an A/C car that allows (at least designed to) fresh air to flow through the dash vents. There is no opening between the kick panel louvers and the exterior of the car. I can only guess that the kick panel louvers are for non A/C cars. Of course I am nomally wrong.

Did you remove the kick panel louvers? I have a 69 without A/C, you have a 68 with A/C, and I know behind the louvers are doors which are controled by silver ***** located on the lower dash.
None of this has anything to do with your original quote about air coming from under the bumper.

Hi,
I, too, think the reference is to the two more-or-less oval openings cut in the front valance panel below the grills.
I believe the first 68 model year cars didn't have them. Then, they started to appear on the production line, and I believe a Service Bulletin was issued to the dealers to cut the valances on customer's cars that had over-heating problems.
Regards,
Alan

Alan is right about the 68's not having the openings in the front valance panel below the grills. Mine had two very crudely cut openings there, so obviously it had an overheating problem. The kick panel vents do let outside air in. The two little vent ***** on the center console open and close the rusty looking vent door (see picture) directly in front of the lower/middle part of the car door. Right above the floor vent door is an opening for the side vents (non-AC). The “fresh” air comes in through the cowl/wiper tray area.

I will look this weekend. The car caught on fire this past fall and the kick panels were replaced. During the work I noticed that there was no inlet for air. I will look at the area you mentioned. Gets hot in the summer without the air.
Thanks

Hi M68,
I like the assortment of tools hung behind your car.
Many people tend more towards wrenches, but yours offer some interesting possibilities too.

You can see the duct in that picture right above your post. The front fender makes up the outside wall of the duct.
