Default Header suggestions

I'm at the point where I'm looking for a quality set of headers for my 72 project. The original 350 is now a 383 cu in engine with 200cc intake port, straight plug aluminum heads, an edelbrock performer air gap intake and a Holley 750 carb. Cam is a comp cams XR288HR-10 with gross lift of .520 Intake and .540 exhaust.

Obviously not the original setup from the factory, which is why I am not going to use the original exhaust manifolds. My question is for you performance guru's out there. What header size would you choose for my performance street build car? 1 5/8", 1 3/4" or 1 7/8" And keep in mind, it is not an all out track build car. I want a good mid range torque, vs all out top end H.P.

I don't want to go buy the wrong application header, or base my decision on "name brand". but obviously I want the best choice.

Your build is geared toward midrange power to 6500 RPM. the 1 3/4 or 1 7/8 is the best match for your combo. I would go 1 7/8.

Hooker Super Comp headers. 1.75" diameter, I have some 10 yr old NOS set that I might be interested in selling.

Smaller primary tubes will provide better low end torque but will suffer somewhat in the upper RPMs.
First, make sure you pick a header that will fit your exhaust ports in your heads without restriction.
Personally, I think 1 3/4" is more than enough for your application.
1 7/8" seem to be kind of a pain to fit based on the threads I've read on them out here so I would avoid them unless you REALLY need them IMO.

I originally went for 1 5/8" on my 409 SBC with Profiler 195 heads but had to go up to 1 3/4" because the exhaust ports would have been restricted buy the 1 5/8" tubes and I didn't feel like slotting holes and grinding the crap out of the pipes. I also don't plan on turning this thing over 5500-6000 RPM.

Thanks for the replys. I kind of figured that the larger tube headers were what I would get. I saw a posting recently about the custom image SS steel headers built with the assistance of another forum member. Has anyone seen any dyno runs proving the effectiveness of these pipes? Or any positive or negative feedback at all? I did see a recent posting where someone chose to order them, but I cannot find anything else out about them. Hookers have been in the business for yrs along with other manufacturers such as hedman. I dont have a problem paying for quality, but I want a part that will be effective.
