2020 C3 of the Year Finalist - Modified
Default CS144 Alt upgrade

Did some researching and couldn't find anything to answer my specific questions.

I have the cs144 mounted in and 6 ga wire run from the alternators batt. terminal to the starter terminal. How are you guys protecting the wire? I noticed most are using fusible links on smaller 8ga wire. I'm thinking of running either a little breaker or fuse it.

Also, how are you guys choosing the size of fuse/breakers and where are you buying them from?.....local auto stores don't carry anything of such size. I'm thinking something around 100a since I know my car isn't pulling that many (total). A/C and radio will be installed later.

Thanks,

Ryan

Late model GM cars have 175 AMP fuses between alternator and body harness. My local O'Rilleys and Auto Zone parts stores carry them.

Yes you should. If that cable's insulation gets worn and grounds out the result won't be good. (think sparks/fire) If you put a fuse inline with it it and it did pull too many amps (in your case not likely) or ground out it would blow the fuse instead.

Orielly's had fuses but no fuse holders for 6ga or larger. I did find a fuse holder for up to 4ga wire at walmart of all places. They are in their car/audio section. I realized my 6ga had a little bit of corrosion starting to form. My brother gave me some extra 4ga cable he had around.

That's how I did mine. The big fuse is in a plastic holder that's bolted to the passenger-side kick-up on the floorboard.
