Default 1968 Power Steering Problem

I recently blew a high pressure power steering hose at the pump and drained my system of fluid on my 68. I drove the car for about 15-20 minutes before I disconnected the drive belt. After replacing the hose, I added fluid and cranked the wheels lock to lock to bleed out the air. The steering is still not working properly thou. The full assist is not there and with the wheels off the ground, the car turns harder to the left than the right, in fact if I let go of the wheel it will turn itself to the right.
I have never had a problem bleeding systems before, wondering if I damaged the pump by running with no fluid? I could use some suggestions.

If the wheel is turning by itself when off the ground the PS control valve has to be adjusted. Here is a link for adjustment, it can be done without disconnecting the piston.

The real question is how much oil might have been left inside the pump to lubricate the sliding and rotating parts for the 20 minutes that you drove it. I am afraid that things are scored inside the pump and small pieces of debris may have been circulated down into the control valve. I think that you most likely need a new pump and the system flushed with fresh power steering fluid to get rid of the debris or fine metallic particles.

BTW, I would now expect that your pump is noisy most of the time - even when you are not turning the steering wheel. That would be a good indication of damage inside the pump.

actually the pump is totally quiet and it can't see needing to readjust control valve since that was extactly how it was before the hose let go..any thoughts on that??

so you think the wheel turning to the right by itself is not a problem and wouldnt contribute to the difficulty in turning to the left which is the direction you would be fighting since the pressure is incorrectly balanced to the right?

I understand that systems like what I described would point to control valve adjustment, just wondering how I go from a system that is operating perfectly to experiencing a loss of fluid and now the control valve needs to be adjusted? The two things do not seem to add up unless I am missing something

maybe you have something lodged in the control valve from driving with low to no fluid. Your car do what you want but I would adjust the valve and see if that corrects your problem, Good luck.
