I'm about to send my quadrajet to get rebuilt and when I was going to remove it I noticed that the idle solenoid wasn't really plugged in to anything, its just on the carb. Is this a problem or something I should be concerned about?
Order the AIM; you're going to want it for other things. You can go ahead and rebuild the Q-Jet during the interim. AIM will show the solenoid, how it installs, and the wiring.

Mike is right - the Haynes manuals are garbage. The information is incomplete and very often completely inaccurate. Throw that sucker away and don't ever use the info in that book. Get a real GM shop manual for your car along with the AIM. By definition, there is only one AIM.
The solenoid wire should be in your engine wire harness right by the carb - if it's not, someone either cut it off or it was never there and someone installed a carb with a solenoid.
The solenoid was used for one of two purposes: Some cars and years used the solenoid as an idle-up solenoid to maintain engine idle speed when the A/C compressor engaged. Other years and cars used the solenoid as an anti-dieseling solenoid, which would decrease idle speed when the ignition was shut off to avoid run-on.
I always thought it was just me that thought the haynes was missing info. Thanks guys ill be looking for another one. Probably gona get the CD version from willcox so I can print whichever pages I want
