I'm not certain, but I think it has mostly to do with which transmission you have. The early cars used Muncie transmissions. Later cars used Saginaws. The shifters won't interchange.
I got curious so I dug through some old catalogs I have and found an old Hurst shifter catalog. '69-'79 Corvette with Muncie or Borg Warner (T-10) transmission takes Shifter 391-7992 with installation kit 373-8611. 80-81 Corvette with Borg Warner transmission takes shifter 391-0028 with installation kit 373-8621. I guess I will keep an eye on e bay and here.
I can't see the shifter being all that different, they have to come up in the same spot, the mounting plate and rods, and the ends of the rods make the difference because of the trans.

if you read that for sale post ( if thats what we are talking about) he listed the tranny he had the shifter on... im sure the shifter would work.. just not the linkage..
