HEI distributor hook up?
I've helped a friend assemble his new 350 engine and want to start it on the engine stand. He has an aftermarket HEI distributor. How should it be wired to just start the engine for break in on the stand? There are two male spade terminals marked TACH and BATTERY on the dist cap. I have one of the break in stands that has a key switch with a ballast resistor and one wire that goes to the coil. I don't want to damage his new HEI distributor. Should I connect the wire from the ballast resistor to the battery terminal on the HEI? I usually just use an old point type distributor for starting a new engine, but it would be nice to be able to break in his engine and have everything adjusted so he can just drop it in his 81.

bypass the resistor even if you have to run a spade connector wire lead right to the + batt terminal. it would bypass the switch on your engine stand
