I replaced the L-88 flywheel on my ZL-1 engine with a stock 327 flywheel in order to make it more drivable. Now the starter drive doesn't want to mesh properly. NOTHING else was changed. Starter is a Powermaster. I have added .140 total thickness of shims........then removed ALL shims...................all to no avail.
is the tooth count and diameter of the flywheels the same? How do you go from a BB flywheel to a SB flywheel? Did you check the clearance between the pinion gear tooth point and the flywheel tooth valley, should be able to fit a paper clip in there.
I'm beginning to think that there is something within the bellhousing that is binding and not allowing the engine to turn. Only items changed were flywheel, a stock 153 tooth, new Sachs clutch disc and diaphragm pressure plate.
Will pull trans and bell tomorrow.........................
Get under the car, and pry the bendix, or starter gear back with a screw driver, and mesh it with the flywheel. use a paperclip as distance between where the teeth mesh. Add shimms accordingly. i did this on my 468 with an MSD starter took an hour . its a pain in the ***, but there is no magic number. each situation is different.
The problem is that I used an early flywheel (62-67 type, casting # 3791021), which is too thick and thus rubbed againts the cam tunnel plate on the back of the ZL-1 block. I need the later design, thinner flywheel. I'm not sure when GM changed flywheel designs and went with the thinner one, I'm thinking around 1968 or 69.

Especially since the BB is externally weighted and the SB is internally weighted.
