My 78 Vette pipes is making funny squeeking or metal hitting sounds. I noticed I used to have these bushings in the pipe cutouts on the chasis that are no longer there now.
Not sure if it was pipe packing or what, but essenstially under the chasis there are two holes where the muffler pipes feed right through. When I look at my Vette from underneath I notice that there is a lot of space in between the muffler pipe and the hole that surrounds it.
See picture...
Its that bar that runs horizontal before the clutch as you look down you see the muffler go through the holes... what can I put in between the space of the holes where the pipe goes through? Thanks.
The pipes should not be touching the crossmember holes or as mentioned above each other. If that's a newly installed system take it back to whoever installed it.

Are you saying there are no exhaust hangers for these pipes except at the rear? There should be a hanger along side each hole to keep the exhaust in the center or
When I put dual exhaust on my 78 4spd I bought a hanger bracket.
If it's for a 2 1/2" : edit- looks like the link to Corvette Central doesnt work anymore
That is correct, looking at this photo there are no hangers except for in the rear! I found out the pipes are rubbing the leaves on the suspension. Any advice to cure this?

Not sure what you are saying, but looking at the picture above your post [from karol], there IS a bracket there - between the rubber mount and trans - and those pipe clamps are wrapped around the "ears" of it. You do need that hanger/clamps there to minimize the pipe movement.
There aren't any hangers midway along the pipes. The only hangers I see are the ones in the back that are holding the mufflers. The pipes leading to the back are rubbing against my leaves suspension, making a scratching metal sound whenever I drive or bumps (or drive period). They are fastened tight from the manifold through the 2 inch cross member holes but there arent any hangers at that point. The guy before me had filled in those holes with some sort of rubber... they have since come undone and hence I have this noise.
You are missing this part at the transmission mount and the 2 clamps that attach it to the pipes. If the pipes are rubbing the rear spring they are either not installed correctly or they were bent incorrectly.
I bet its doing a little more than just squeaking without the hanger from the transmission. When you get the hanger in place with the pipes it should keep the rear pipes from turning and drooping down. I placed a floor jack with a small piece of plywood (12x12) with short 2x4 nailed to it (4"side up) under the rear pipes where yours are touching to hold them up and keep them separated while I tightened everything up.
Also a worn motor mount could allow the engine to twist a bit under acceleration and cause the pipes to hit underneath. But first, install the hanger that secures the pipes to the crossmember.
Just to update everyone, it was missing insulators on the back hangers and it was missing hangers in the middle. Took it to a shop they charged me $80 to weld hangers on. No more squeeky metal noises. Thanks to all!
