Hi...........scattered the ring and pinion on our 81 this morning. Really glad we didn't go to solvang now.
So is it an 2.87 ratio or 2.88? # 3 carrier? Dana 44? California car with the th350....But now a 200 4 r. Not in summits catalog. Know a good place for parts in central cal? I'll be doing the repair myself.......thanks....ramair.
From everything I have heard over the years, that rear diffy is toast and not fixable, you need another one, best to get it overhauled by Mike Dyer so you have no more issues, for a street car that is....
Dragracing, big tires....it's not the diffy you want....
Well......................I wasn't going to get under it till tonight and get dirty. So I just came back from under it and guess what? Thats right........Rear u-joint.. How cool is that. I'll have it going in the morning. So no wonder I couldn't find any parts for it. I did see all kinds of replacement 3rd members for $1000. Not worth rebuilding? Too bad. But lucky me! Thanks for the reply. Bryan.
I have one in my attic... It has about 65K on it, I swapped it for an iron differential because of the BBC swap I did. I can send pics, it looks really, really good inside. PM me if your interested, I don't know what shipping would be from FL to CA though...have the half shafts too if you need them.

i can't use it. mine has the same. what is required to swap the iron diff in place of the aluminum? i have a 72 project i'm working on that i could swap the diffs on if its not to bad of a job.
GS977, this is about as "bolt in" as any mod I've done to the car. The iron differential bolts up the to batwing directly. You do have to use the pinion bracket for the iron diff, change the halfshafts (different yokes and you'll need flanges vs. yokes at the trailing arms) and the struts (completley different than the 80-82's). You may also need a different u-joint or yoke and u-joint for your drive shaft depending on what you have. The one fabrication mod is you'll have to cut the nose off the pinion bracket for it to clear the frame. If you have all the parts, you can do this easily in a weekend.

Mis-information here... IMO. There are plenty street/strip cars out there that live. It's all in having good U-joints and having the proper angle on the half shafts on acceleration. Of course once the HP level gets excessive, having Mike put steel caps in the center section or having a dedicated center built would be a good upgrade. I've been racing/working on Corvettes for many many years and of all the 80-82s that I've seen with rearend problems, it's not the center itself. Mainly side yoke failures, outter axle failures, and of course u-joints. If you upgrade those, you'll have a stout piece...within reason of course.
