Default Cold Air Intake Cleaner

Other than looking sporty what is the benefit to replacing the old enclosed air cleaner with the open cold air intake? Thanks

The benefit is minimal. Not worth the effort...but if the owner wants to do it, what the heck...

The benefit is a better looking engine compartment and better flowing air system. More air equal more horsepower. Also, if you can draw in air away from the heat source, ie "the engine " then you get a better cold charge of air to help atomization for combustion. Just mtc

OEM style filter enclosure: could be a bottleneck at WOT, not allowing all the air the engine wants or needs. Not really much of an issue on a stock engine. Isolates intake noise. Some used hot air from engine compartment, some took cooler air from if front of the radiator. Cooler is better.

Open element filter: eliminates the bottleneck, looks cool, increases sound level. We use to turn the filter lid upside down on Dad's Buick to malke it louder when the 4-bbl came in. Still uses hot air from compartment.

Cold air system: as name implies, takes cooler air from outside the eingine compartment. Folks like K&N claim hp gains at WOT. Probably so but you can look at the advertisements and decide if it is worth the $.

Hope this helps.

Now that brings back memories. Boy was my dad pissed the one time I forgot to flip it back over. He cranked it up next morning and thought something was wrong with his Monte Carlo. It sure sounded cool!!!

Depends on what you mean by "open cold air intake".

Does your hood have cowl induction and is the OEM a cowl induction cleaner assy sealed to the hood when closed?

If you don't have a cowl induction hood then there is no COLD air entering the open air cleaner. ONLY HOT AIR! Hotter than then the air where the OEM snorkels were getting the air.

If it is a cowl induction car then open the induction flapper in the hood and let air flow past the open cleaner and out the cowl.

If not modified then the cowl induction door only opens at WOT.
