Default Flooding after new fuel pump

Hello everyone,

I just replaced the fuel pump on my 82 TBI, which solved my sputtering under load issue. Now, I have a flooding issue. It smells like it is running rich all the time, cold and hot. About a month before the fuel pump replacement, I replaced my O2 sensor after getting the OBD code for O2 sensor. The car ran better after the O2 sensor replacement and even better when I replaced the fuel pump. I probably have multiple issues, but here are some of my observations. Any ideas where to start?

- Running rich and flooding started the first crank after replacing the fuel pump.
- Used a NAPA OEM replacement fuel pump
- No fuel is leaking in to the TB barrels (i.e. no apparent injector leaks)
- Intermittent TPS code. Wire harness leading to the sensor seems to have an intermittent connection (wiggle test)
- Thermostat housing sensor wires bare. Insolation cracked off about 1" up to the sensor connector.
- No thermostat OBD codes
- Runs rich cold and floods when hot.
- Puffs of black smoke when it first starts and smaller, faint puffs of black smoke as it runs.

Q. Could the previous owner tried tweaking the fuel pressure regulator to compensate for the failing fuel pump? If so, now that there is plenty of fuel pressure, could that cause the rich running?

Thank you for all your advice!

Default

if it has an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, adjust it, if not, pull the vacum line to it and check for gas, its not opening enough and is back pressuring your injectors, the other thing could be a weak injector or one stuck open. Btw, you have the same basic system used on the 84 C4's, if you sometimes cant get answers in C3, there are some good tech's there also.
