NOT teflon tape. That is meant to seal water leaks....not petroleum leaks.
I use teflon tape or even liquid teflon on all kinds of engine oil, tranny, and rearend AN fitting cooling lines. Even plugs and filler ports It is not recommended for fuel because the tape can be cut by the threads and it could end up in the carb or injectors
AN and other self-sealing joints don't require any sealant. So, using teflon on them is fine...because it has no effect on whether the joint seals or not.
Anyone can use anything for any purpose they want. But, teflon tape was designed primarily as a lubricant for pipe threaded joints so you could get a tighter joint. It also helps fill some minute gaps in the thread joint for water-carrying lines. There is a special [yellow] teflon tape for natural gas joints, but I don't know of any manufacturer that recommends using teflon tape with petroluem/fuel system.
Most modern tapes and pastes are both a thread lube and a sealant. Try and stay away from a silicone base.
Many different pastes and at least 5 different densities of PTFE tape. BTW, the colors aren't for compatibility, but for industry or building code compliance. green for oxy and yellow for nat gas.
Loctite has some very good choices and you can preseal the threads just like the bolts you buy,if you wish.
