My shifter is starting to go so can I just get an after market shifter? Are there any particular ones I just keep at the top of my list? Thanks in advance.
Hurst "competition plus" is the perfect choice.. A little pricey but you get what you pay for. It bolts to the trans and wil work much better than stock. Once you try it you will see how nice they are.
i have the B&M shifter and shift kit in my 1980 and its a very smooth shifter with nice looks..
Mark- if you get a chance take a picture of it for me, and if you really have time take a side console piece off and take a picture of how it mounted. I have one but just haven't gotten around to putting it in, it's a Mega Shifter console model. Thanks!
Sorry about that :bb Thanks for the replies. Itsa manual tranny. :D
I was hoping it would last until I could get the ROD 6sp. but I guess not. We want to take it to the Great Falls, Mt. meet this weekend so I hope it lives.
Hurst shifter #39117992 for $165.95 and the installation kit #3738611 for $89.95. I bought it from http://www.summitracing.com. Go to my web site to see a couple of pics of the shifter.
I put a Hurst Competition Plus on my 74 over the winter. I'm still kicking myself for not having done it 15 years ago. It's night and day compared to the stock shifter. Also, no more rattles from the shift handle.
What B&M shifter are you describing? Got pic's? I didn't know there was an autoshifter replacement for the 80 vette. I have the 700R4 in my '80 and would sure like to 'upgrade'. Modif's req'd?
The Hurst doesn't have a reverse lockout and I was worried also about accidently going into the reverse gate. Trust me, you won't go into reverse unless you really want to. There is a very stiff spring that prevents it and you really have to push the handle to the left hard to get into the reverse gate. The old shifter felt like a broom handle in a bucket of bolts compared to the Hurst and I rebuilt the old shifter to try and make it better. Go for it.
Thanks fixr. My '76 doesn't allow one to pullout the key without the car in reverse. (the column has to spin into a certain position. I am not sure if your '74 does but if so, did you simply bypass the lockout or put it "permanently" in reverse as far as the column lock is concerned?
I saw a hurst shifter in Eckler's, it looked EXACTLY like the stock shifter, but the reverse lockout in not functional as a few people have mentioned. I intend to get one and have only heard good reviews about it.
Re: Replacement Shifter for 1980? (silvervetteman)
Thanks all for the replies. I'll have to investigate further but it's off to Great Falls today. I'll be away from the computer until Tuesday and I'll let you guys know what I have decided then.
Thanks again for the repies.
Sorry for being so late to reply but the holiday got in the way. :D The Competition Plus comes with all the necessary linkage to retain the column lock feature and also connects up the reverse light switch. You will retain all your stock features except for the reverse lockout which you won't need anyway.
