Finally pulled my 1980 automatic out of the garage and was doing a bunch of maintenance stuff to get it road ready. Go to turn the key and now I can't get it out of auxiliary mode. You also can pull the key out now and still crank the engine (or assuming it would if the battery was charged). Any ideas on what is going on?
If it goes to the lock position but the steering doesn't lock it'll probably be the link that activates the little dog-pin in the column
If it won't go to the lock position at all it's probably the links that tell the column the shifter is in park
Not 100% sure on the 80, on mine there is a cable from the trans to the column just outside the firewall. When it shifts into park that pushes up on a lever and that turns everything in the column to allow the key into off.
If you look at the column just where it comes out of the firewall and see that lever going off to the side, check and see if it moves when shifting in and out of park. If there is one and it does move, try lifting it manually to see if it's not quite making it into the park position
