My 2 year quest to figure out the same problem continues. That problem is under hard acceleration my car sounds like "enging breaking popping or makes a loud puh puh puh puh sound" and occasionaly shudders and jerks. Seems to happen under hard throttle rather than at a certain or high rpm. Have done all tune up. Timing has been set, reset, advanced, retarded etc. Same prob. Today I tried a different q-jet. Same problem! :mad Did notice however one NEW CLUE POSSIBLY. With the air cleaner off car sounds normal, but when you quickly rev the throttle (car out of gear) a sucking type sound is heard. Not the usual air being taken in hiss, but more like the sound that a straw makes when you are drinking the last bit of a drink. Or even at first like a tick or slap sound type sound. (discribing sounds in works is difficult and makes me feel silly) But way loud. Does this shed any light. Come on guys I am at my wits end here already!
Just a thought, do you have the AIR pump on your engine? I had a car YEARS ago with strange vacuum/suction noises that turned to be a component in the AIR system took a dump. I dont recall if it was the "muffler" or some valving component.
Air system has been removed by the prior owner...I did reuse the gasket. Could vacuum line that run the lights actually effect engine performance? Or is the system seperate?
Headlights are hooked into the manifold. Try pinching off the line out of the rear of the intake and see if the sound stops. This will eliminate the headlights and interior accessories.
Any vacuum leak will cause a problem. Have you tried spraying something like carb cleaner around all vacuum sources with the engine running? It you have a vacuum leak you will hear engine rpm's increase at idle.
