My friend had the clear acrylic targa top that was on his '78 when he sold it. I want to use it on my '80 but the windows hit it when I try to close the doors. Are the tops that different between 78 and 80 or is the acrylic top warped? If it won't work on mine I'll make someone a deal in it.
The door windows have at least 4 different wayS to adjust the windows position. Pull the door panel and start the madness
Yep. If you want to use the top, you will have to adjust the door glasses to fit. Think about it first. If you fit the glasses to the acrylic top, your t-tops won't fit your windows when you put your tops back on.
Purchase the assembly instruction manual (AIM). The AIM has printed directions and diagrams for setting the door glasses.
I would take a hard look at the tops and see what brand they are. The GM tops will be marked with LOF on the rear outer corner. If they are not GM tops there are other tops out there that are great quality.. (Melrose)..... and some that were (are) junk.
If they tops are GM tops then I would look at the weatherstrips and then possibly re-adjust the tops to fit the car. Tops that fit one car never fit another one unless you are just very lucky.
If the fiberglass tops on your car are working fine then this points toward the top itself as the issue.
I've replaced the weatherstripping everywhere and the factory tops fit well generally. I prefer to leave the current adjustments alone since I already went through that mess. I may be posting an item on the For Sale section really soon. I need to think about it first. Thanks for all the responses.
