I used this, or a similar earlier version on my 86 Camaro's 700r4 and it worked ok. I also had to use a lockout switch to prevent the tranny from "hunting" around 35 mph. I'm not sure it was worth the expense and effort though.
I did not really care for the 700r4 as it came from the factory. Many others over in the Camaro forums have modified the internals of the r4.
I was going to use it but I moved the tv cable tighter to hold the gear longer with more line pressure.
this is not how to adjust the shift point rpm
Ralph, I had the 700r4 in my c-3 from the later 80's. somebody else needs to comment on the kit and weights. I found it easier instead of mucking around to buy what ever rpm I needed governor.
The best all around was my 5000 rpm gov. So I had a no kickdown 700R4. On the line you just put the tranny in "2" mash the gas to the floor and let it do an auto 1-2 shift and then I would manually shift 2-3 at over 7000 rpm if I wanted to..
The gove sets the max WOT shift point. Off the gas it would shift at lower rpm
To deal with shift point changes on auto trannies with TV cable, they must be dealt with in the following sequence:
1) Adjust TV cable properly so that TV pressure is correct from beginning of cable travel through WOT. The TV cable is NOT to be used to adjust shift points...but it must be set correctly first, so that further shift point adjustments can be addressed properly.
2) Adjust the overall WOT shift schedule with a governor exchange or by changing the weights/springs in your governor as indicated by the Summit Racing kit. This change should set the rpm where the tranny shifts [in all ranges] at approximately the correct rpm during WOT operation.
3) Make changes to individual shift valve springs (or adjustment collars, if the trans has them) for fine tuning the shift timing of each range. Unless there is significant difference between the shift timing of the various ranges, this action is rarely performed. But, with a complete rebuild of the transmission...including a rebuild of the valve body...this may need to be done for one or more shift ranges.
So, setting the TV cable properly is a prerequisite to dealing with trans shift points. And governor swap or modification is required to raise or lower the entire shift schedule of the transmission. Finally, fine tuning is performed on the individual shift valves, if needed.
Not following this sequence of events can get you [and your transmission] in all kinds of trouble and potentially cause early clutch wear or failure.
